Fifth anniversary celebrations just get bigger for WHP10
Manchester’s Warehouse Project is delighted to announce that the fabulous M.I.A. is to perform at a very special event on Saturday 13th November at the iconic underground warehouse event. Celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, the award winning Warehouse Project has become one of the UK’s leading dance events and this event is just one of a host of nights that will see dance music legends perform under Manchester Piccadilly Station.
Now in its fifth year, The Warehouse Project has been one of the forerunners in the underground dance music scene creating a niche market in the North of England with some of the biggest acts in international dance music clambering to play at the venue underneath Manchester’s Piccadilly Station. The organisers have signalled their intent to create their biggest and best line up yet with the WHP10 events, names such as Richie Hawtin, Delphic, Doves, Kelis, David Guetta, Doom and Ian Brown amongst some of the big names playing.
Joining M.I.A. on the bill for the 13th November gig will be a set by BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac who will be co-hosting the night as part of the annual Annie Mac Presents Tour. Dubstep pioneer Rusko will be dropping one of his trademark heavy sets, fresh from working with M.I.A. on her new album.
There are still some very special live guests to be added to the line-up who will be revealed in the coming weeks.
M.I.A. will take to The Warehouse Project stage in one of the most intimate settings that the controversial singer will play in 2010. Recently headlining The Big Chill Festival in Herefordshire, the star is back making waves in her country of birth with recent album MAYA following a year long hiatus from live performing. M.I.A. enjoyed success last year on the back of her monster hit “Paper Planes” which featured in the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire movie.
The New York based artist, who was born in the UK from Sri Lankan heritage, was recently named amongst Time Magazine’s 2009 Top 100 World’s Most Influential People and was Rolling Stone Magazine’s album of the year in 2007.
The event is sure to be one of the most exciting and eagerly anticipated nights of the entire 2010 series, with M.I.A. performing her unique live show on stage, joined by some incredible supports. One of the most original and important artists to emerge from the UK in the past 10 years, her politically conscious and sonically adventurous music has seen her rise from underground maverick to global superstar over the last few years.
The Warehouse Project’s Store Street events underneath Manchester Piccadilly Train Station have for years been a setting for some of the finest names in electronic music, where world renowned acts and DJs play to 2,000 revellers in a visually stunning industrial space. Known for bringing together the best names across all genres of dance music, as well as some of the best live acts from around the world, it has become an internationally recognised yearly event.
The series this year includes over 30 different nights across three months, encompassing a wide range of stylistically varied events, from exclusive live performances to DJ sets.
With many of the events selling out in hours, the hype surrounding the announcement of this special performance is set to send the dance community’s fervour for the WHP events into orbit, following this superb addition to the WHP10 line up to celebrate the fifth anniversary.

Artist Profiles
M.I.A.
Mathangi Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A., first came to people’s attention back in 2005 with her singles Galang and Sunshowers both hugely praised by the music media for their originality; raucous blends of ragga, pop, hip hop and electro underpinned by M.I.A.’s unique half rapping half singing style and politicized lyrics. Her first album Arular, which she also created all the artwork for, was named after her father, a leader of the Tamil Tigers political group in Sri Lanka, a cause her music often addresses. The album was critically adored, and was nominated for the Mercury Music prize. Her second album Kala, named after her mother, contained the massive singles Boyz and the Diplo-produced Paper Planes. The success of these singles bought her wider recognition, as did her hugely popular online mixtape with Diplo, Piracy Funds Terrorism.
Never afraid to court controversy, she is known for being outspoken and open about her political beliefs, with the recent video for the single Born Free from latest album Maya banned from You Tube for graphic content. She performed with Jay-Z and T.I. at the Grammy awards last year, just a few days before giving birth to her first child. She is also an accomplished artist, graduating from St. Martins and creating artwork for the likes of Peaches and Elastica as well as much of her own back catalogue, known for her bold, unique visual style. She was recently named by Time magazine as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, and has been nominated for two Grammy awards and an Oscar for her work on Slumdog Millionaire.
Annie Mac
Annie Mac has established herself as one of the most important names on British radio today, with her hugely popular Friday night show on Radio 1 which is a platform for the best new music from across the dance music spectrum. Playing anything from electro, dubstep, to techno or drum and bass, it is difficult to overstate her influence on the scene, with countless acts coming to prominence through her featuring of their music.
The now famous mini mix section on the show allows DJs to showcase their sets condensed into a five minute time frame, with DJs such as Jamie XX, Chase and Status, Crookers and Doorly all taking up the challenge. She is also a hugely accomplished club DJ, her sets as upfront, eclectic and exciting as her shows. She DJs around Europe, often hosting nights under her Annie Mac Presents brand at festivals such as Bestival, Creamfields and RockNess, as well as clubs such as Koko and Fabric. She also regularly appears on BBC2’s The Culture Show as a music critic.
Rusko
One of the most influential names in bringing dubstep from out of its South London niche into the global scene it is today, Rusko is known for his huge club anthems and thrilling DJ sets. Born in Leeds, his early tunes, often with long-time collaborator Caspa, were more in line with dubstep’s original template of sub bass, dub techniques pioneered by reggae acts and beats influenced by UK garage and drum and bass. With tunes such as 2NAQ and the anthem Cockney Thug, he began to push dubstep in an entirely new direction; more lively, upbeat and aimed squarely at the dance floor.
He pioneered the now ubiquitous wobbling basslines and hard drums that had more in common with techno or electro than dub, gaining massive crossover popularity. His mix with Caspa for Fabric was the first commercially available dubstep mixes, and his remixes for the likes of Little Boots and Kid Sister bought the sound to completely new audiences. He recently worked on M.I.A.’s latest album MAYA in LA where he now lives and regularly tours the US and Europe with his thrilling DJ sets. This was showcased perfectly on his storming essential mix for Radio 1, taking in tracks by Skream, Chase and Status, Jakes, Benga as well as plenty of his own productions.
